AOC Wants To Know Who “Advised” Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to Not Disclose Gifts

AOC also discussed Thomas’s statement on Sunday: “And then on top of that, he is now implicating his colleagues. And I do believe that Chief Justice John Roberts must now come forward and state if he allows and is allowing this kind of very serious corruption on this court.” She continued, “When he’s talking about his colleagues and who advised him to break the law, I think we need to know who those people are.

On Thursday, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez called for Thomas’s impeachment: “I do think articles need to be introduced. If we decide strategically that the actual author of those articles and who introduces them may not be me, that’s fine. I will support impeachment … I think this has gone far, far beyond any sort of acceptable standard in any democracy, let alone in American democracy.”

Meanwhile, Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) wrote in a statement on Thursday: “The highest court in the land shouldn’t have the lowest ethical standards….Today’s report demonstrates, yet again, that Supreme Court Justices must be held to an enforceable code of conduct, just like every other federal judge,” he wrote in a statement. 

On Friday, a number of Democrats wrote a letter to Chief Justice Roberts asking him to investigate Thomas, after it was revealed that the justice failed to disclose lavish gifts from Crow. 

“We believe that it is your duty as Chief Justice ‘to safeguard public faith in the judiciary,’ and that fulfilling that duty requires swift, thorough, independent and transparent investigation into these allegations,” the Democrats wrote. The letter was signed by 11 senators and 11 representatives, including Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.), and Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), and Cori Bush (D-Mo.).
