In the wake of last week’s Uvalde, Texas, shooting, the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S history and the 27th this year, conservatives have taken to social media, cable news, and an NRA event that took place just 72 hours after 19 kids and two teachers were murdered to do what they always do: blame the atrocity on literally everything but guns. Republicans have offered ridiculous solutions that all conveniently avoid doing the one thing other nations know prevents these sorts of events from occurring all the time. Ted Cruz thought up only building schools with one door. Texas attorney general Ken Paxton, like many a Republican, wants to arm teachers. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene believes all we need is prayer. A retired detective told Sean Hannity the answer is “man traps…a series of interlocking doors at the school entrance that are triggered by a trip wire…and it traps the shooter like a rat.”

Not to be outdone by Detective Boobytrap, whose ideas sound a lot like the ones Kevin McCallister used to stop the Wet Bandits in Home Alone, Fox News’s Laura Ingraham posited the following on Tuesday evening: that guns don’t kill people, a drug known for making people lethargic and hungry kills people.

Yes, according to Ingraham, we don’t need to get rid of weapons that can fire 400 rounds per minute, we need to go after pot.

During a segment with Russell Kamer, M.D., the medical director of Partners in Safety, an organization that helps companies perform drug tests on employees, Ingraham noted that “it was initially reported” that the Uvalde gunman “was a user,” but that The New York Times “mysteriously” edited that detail from a story. “Why aren’t people in general not talking more about the pot-psychosis–violent-behavior connection?” Ingraham asked. “What we find in studies [is that] it’s very clear that the use of the high-potency marijuana is strongly associated with the development of psychosis,” Kamer claimed. He added that his “colleagues in Colorado, where they’re sounding the alarm because that was one of the first states to legalize—it’s practically a daily occurrence that kids come into the emergency rooms in florid, cannabis-induced psychosis.”

Ingraham then suggested that Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke is a fool because he wants to ban guns—which have killed more than 18,000 people in the U.S. this year—but has endorsed legalizing weed. “People like Beto…they are fine with doing a run on the guns, and I guess you could argue that if that’s what you want to do—try to get rid of the Second Amendment—but yet [they are] completely oblivious to what the legalization of marijuana has done and is doing to an entire generation of Americans with violent consequences,” she argued, absurdly.

Obviously, Ingraham did not mention if any of the countries where mass shootings don’t occur on a regular basis have legalized weed, because that would undermine her entire premise.

Report: Republicans are actively laying the groundwork to steal as many elections as possible

Per Politico:

The plan, as outlined by a Republican National Committee staffer in Michigan, includes utilizing rules designed to provide political balance among poll workers to install party-trained volunteers prepared to challenge voters at Democratic-majority polling places, developing a website to connect those workers to local lawyers and establishing a network of party-friendly district attorneys who could intervene to block vote counts at certain precincts. “Being a poll worker, you just have so many more rights and things you can do to stop something than [as] a poll challenger,” said Matthew Seifried, the RNC’s election integrity director for Michigan, stressing the importance of obtaining official designations as poll workers in a meeting with GOP activists in Wayne County last Nov. 6. It is one of a series of recordings of GOP meetings between summer of 2021 and May of this year obtained by POLITICO.

Backing up those front-line workers, “it’s going to be an army,” Seifried promised at an Oct. 5 training session. “We’re going to have more lawyers than we’ve ever recruited, because let’s be honest, that’s where it’s going to be fought, right?” Seifried also said the RNC will hold “workshops” and equip poll workers with a hotline and website developed by Zendesk, a software support company used by online retailers, which will allow them to live-chat with party attorneys on Election Day. In a May 2022 training session, he said he’d achieved a goal set last winter: More than 5,600 individuals had signed up to be poll workers and, several days ago, he submitted an initial list of more than 850 names to the Detroit clerk.

If all this sounds extremely troubling, that’s because it is. “This is completely unprecedented in the history of American elections that a political party would be working at this granular level to put a network together,” Nick Penniman, founder and CEO of election watchdog group Issue One, told Politico. “It looks like now the Trump forces are going directly after the legal system itself and that should concern everyone.”
