Kanye West Claims He “Likes Jewish People Again” Thanks To Jonah Hill and ’21 Jump Street’

Disgraced former shoe salesman and rapper Kanye West has kept mum on social media since his business world fell apart late last year. That ended late Friday night/early Saturday morning when the College Dropout artist, who legally changed his name to Ye in late 2021, popped onto Instagram to declare that he liked Jewish people again.

Before you can say “uh, okay,” the man whose antisemitic comments and follow-up taunts to Adidas forced the company to drop his line of athletic wear explained what caused his change of heart: Jonah Hill’s performance in the 2012 comedy 21 Jump Street

Though West is a chronic deleter of social media posts, let’s take a look at this beauty while we still can. Like the Torah itself, it’s worth scrutinizing this line by line. “Watching Jonah Hill in 21 Jump street made me like Jewish people again,” while a shocking statement, is fairly straightforward. West continues with, “No one should take anger against one or two individuals and transform that into hatred towards millions of innocent people.” Even though this is entry-level humanity, it’s certainly a welcome expression of intelligence from West, who recently brought the vile white supremacist Nick Fuentes to hang out with Donald Trump, and told Alex Jones (!) that he loved Adolf Hitler.

“No Christian can be labeled antisemite knowing Jesus is Jew,” is where it starts to get into the weird zone. Maybe I’ve just got my guard up (my name is Hoffman, after all) but it seems to me that West is using his self-professed pious Christianity as a get-out-of-jail-free card. It’s almost like a “hey, no matter what I do or say will ever stick to me because of this loophole.”

Additionally, if one has listened to many of West’s diatribes in the past (as, unfortunately, I have), you’ll hear an unusual rhetorical flourish of him never saying “a Jew” or even “Jewish.” It’s always just “Jew.” If it was once or twice, fine, but it feels to me like it is a linguistic decision (like Trump saying “Democrat party”) that is intended to have a little more sting.

West continued with, “Thank you Jonah Hill I love you.”

V.F. has reached out to Hill’s representatives to see if the actor-director had any comment. (Surely a “how is this meshuggenah’s Instagram my problem?!? Leave me alone!” would be an understandable response.)

21 Jump Street grossed $202 million at the worldwide box office back in 2012, and most would agree that it is an amusing motion picture. (V.F. did feel, at the time, that its reliance on “no homo!” humor was not its finest attribute.) In addition to Hill, it co-starred Channing Tatum, Brie Larson, Rob Riggle, and Ice Cube. The wacky update of the more straightforward (though still silly!) teen cop drama from the 1980s was the first live action project from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and was enough of a hit to inspire a sequel. Hill has a shared “story by” credit on the film.
