Two days after the horrific Uvalde, Texas, elementary school shooting, Mitch McConnell has said he told Texas senator John Cornyn to meet with Democrats to try to come up with a legislative solution in response to the tragic event that left at least 19 small children and two teachers dead. “I met with Senator Cornyn this morning,” he told CNN. “As you know, he went home yesterday to see the family members and begin the factfinding of this awful massacre, and I have encouraged him to talk with Senator [Chris] Murphy and Senator [Kyrsten] Sinema and others who are interested in trying to get an outcome that is directly related to the problem. I am hopeful that we could come up with a bipartisan solution.”
If you were just dropped on the planet today and didn’t know anything about the Senate minority leader, that would probably sound very encouraging, hopeful, and like the right thing to do. Unfortunately, for those of us who live on earth and have long been familiar with the Kentucky lawmaker, what it actually sounds like is a bunch of bullshit that will likely precede his doing absolutely nothing about the fact that children are collateral damage in his party’s obsession with lethal weapons, or the fact that an 18-year-old can just walk into a store in Texas and buy a pair of AR-15s and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, no questions asked.
Don’t get us wrong—it’ll be great if McConnell actually follows through here with meaningful legislation and the type of response that other countries have had when such tragedies have occurred. And we really hope he does! But we’re also not expecting anything whatsoever from him, and the reason for that is he’s a power-hungry ghoul with no soul who has an extensive track record of blocking gun control legislation, including after devastating school shootings.
Take Sandy Hook, for instance, i.e., the worst school shooting in American history, which left 20 six- and seven-year-olds dead in addition to six adult staff members. After President Barack Obama announced a wide range of gun proposals, including banning military-style assault weapons, McConnell’s reelection campaign released a robocall warning voters that “President Obama and his team are doing everything in their power to restrict your constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Their efforts to restrict your rights, invading your personal privacy and overstepping their authority with executive orders, is just plain wrong.” He told constituents: “I want you to know that I will be doing everything in my power as Senate Republican leader, fighting tooth and nail, to protect your Second Amendment rights so that law-abiding Kentuckians such as yourself can properly and adequately protect yourself, your family, and your country.” In January 2016, he accused Obama of playing politics after the then president announced executive measures to address gun violence. That June, following the Orlando nightclub massacre, he helped defeat four gun control measures. In October 2017, after the Las Vegas mass shooting, he said it was “premature to be discussing legislative solutions, if there are any.” Naturally, McConnell has received more than $1 million in campaign contributions from the NRA.
