Tiffany Haddish has commented on the recent allegations against her concerning child sexual abuse. In an Instagram post, she said that, due to the ongoing legal case, she is incapable of saying too much, but has deep regrets about the sketch she and Aries Spears recorded, which was, in her words, intended to be comedic. She added that she looks forward to sharing more as soon as she can.

Late last week, it was revealed that Haddish had been sued by a 22-year-old unnamed woman on behalf of herself and her younger brother, age 15. In a statement to V.F., Haddish’s lawyer, Andrew Brettler, denied the claims in the lawsuit. He added that the plaintiff’s mother, Trizah Morris, has “been trying to assert these bogus claims against Ms. Haddish for several years.”

“Every attorney who has initially taken on her case—and there were several—ultimately dropped the matter once it became clear that the claims were meritless and Ms. Haddish would not be shaken down,” Brettler continued, before countering that “now, Ms. Morris has her adult daughter representing herself in this lawsuit. The two of them will together face the consequences of pursuing this frivolous action.”

The suit claims that Haddish, with whom the plaintiff claims she was familiar enough to call “Auntie Tiff,” appeared in a video as a minor that was sexually suggestive. The claim alleges that the plaintiff, aged 14 at the time, was encouraged to recreate a mock sandwich shop commercial that involved “moaning and making sexual noises” while eating a sandwich “in a manner that simulated the act of fellatio.” The plaintiff charges that doing so made her “physically, emotionally, and mentally uncomfortable.”

Additionally, the plaintiff alleges that her younger brother was molested by Spears while shooting a video called “Through a Pedophile’s Eyes” that was then uploaded to Funny or Die. The comedy website told The Daily Beast that “Funny or Die found this video absolutely disgusting and would never produce such content. We were not involved with the conceptualization, development, funding, or production of this video. It was uploaded to the site as user-generated content and was removed in 2018 immediately after becoming aware of its existence.”

Spears’s, through his attorney Debra Opri, has also denied all claims, and Opri told V.F. that the comedian “isn’t going to fall for any shakedown.” 

Haddish and Spears are being sued for intentional infliction of emotional distress, gross negligence, sexual battery, sexual harassment, and sexual abuse of a minor. Haddish is also being sued for negligent supervision/failure to warn, breach of fiduciary duty, and constructive fraud.
